We are now taking entries for the 2018 Poetry Extravaganza.

If you have entered in before the format is very similar with this years theme being MEMORIES. For those new to the competition all you need to do is write a poem with the theme of 'Memories' and submit on an official entry form. There are some fabulous prizes with £100 going to the winner in each age category.

  • The poem must be based on the theme of “ Memories” and be no longer than 30 lines
  • One entry per person which may be submitted via school, by post or via e-mail .

How to enter the “Chris Salmon Poetry Extravaganza”

Entries must be received FAO Diane Mitchell ,Birkenhead Central Library, Borough Road, Birkenhead CH41 2XB by 19/01/2018.

Poems will be judged in 5 age categories

  • Ages 7 and under
  • Ages 8 - 11
  • Ages 11-13  
  • Age 14 -16
  • Ages 16+
  • Entrants must live in the Wirral area or attend a school/college in the area.
  • Entry is free and must be submitted via e-mail or post on, or attached to a paper entry form.
  • The poem must be based on the theme of “Memories” and be no longer than 30 lines.
  • One entry per person which may be submitted via school, by post, via e-mail to dianemitchell@wirral.gov.uk
  • For children and young people under 18, it is assumed that the parent/guardian’s permission has been obtained if submitted electronically and/or via school. If a parent/guardian wishes to withdraw their child’s entry, please contact us by 19th January  2018.
  • The judges’ decision is final. There will be no correspondence concerning the results.
  • No alterations may be made to a poem once it has been submitted.
  • Permission to reproduce and display entries will be assumed and entries cannot be returned.
  • Winners will be invited to read at the Presentation Night on Friday 16/03/2018 and also to attend a poetry workshop with renowned local poet John Hughes on Saturday 10/03/2018.
  • All entries must be original and not previously published.
  • By entering the competition, entrants acknowledge that their names may be required to be used in publicity without further consent. Such publicity may include without limitation the entrant’s name, photographs and/or video footage of the entrant, biographical information provided by the entrants/winner and/or any statement made by them concerning the competition and/or the prize. Entrants agree that such elements may be used by the Promoter in any and all media in perpetuity throughout the world as the Promoter in its sole discretion sees fit.

Entry Forms are available for you to download below. Click on the format you want, Microsoft Word or PDF. Downloaded forms usually end up in your 'Downloads' folder unless you specify another folder for them. Often you can click to open the form as soon as it has finished downloading but if you don't see this option go to your downloads folder and look for a file called 'How_to_enter_2018 finalversion'
